Hi there,

I'm using Nero Backitup 4 on Windows Vista Ultimate. I'm trying to back up some data from a network drive. I'm getting lots of messages of the form:

Read file ... has been failed. System error: (50) the request is not supported

I suspect I get one of those for every file I try to backup, but I'm not sure.

Any ideas of what the problem is and how to fix it?

Cheers!

I suspect that B & B is not set up for a network or needs adjustment in the proxy setting. The proxy and network settings are in the Advanced\Options\Network. You should take a look at these and the help file. I don't have a network so I don't have access to the Network menu in Backitup and Burn.

Does this help?

I checked. I do get that error for every file. However the files "seem" to be present in the backup...

Looking at the backup logs I have a bunch of lines like this:

03:58:32 PM Read file (...) has been failed. System error: (50) The request is not supported.
Source file: LBWinBackupFile.cpp, Line: 136

3:58:32 PM Assert Failed!!!
Source file: BackupItemInfo.cpp, Line: 1758

03:58:32 PM Assert Failed!!!
Source file: BackupItemInfo.cpp, Line: 309

BTW, I'm using Nero BackItUp 4 4.2.3.100

So I doubt that it's a network issue :(

Cheers!

From Microsoft website in regards to system error (50)-

"The second error message above (system error 50) can occur when the NET ACCOUNTS /SYNC command is run on a member server or workstation. The /SYNC switch is only supported on a domain controller.

To resolve these problems, start the Netlogon service on the domain controller. "

Note that the above is for workstations 3.5 and other work stations and certain servers, but does not mention Vista.

It may be a synchronization problem between the backup device and the network. Backitup has a sync function and, although, I don't know how you would use it for this problem but in a sense, it may be saying the same thing. I wonder if you would get the same error if you turned off verification? It may be that after the burn, it is trying to verify what it has backed up against what's on the network but can't sychronize the two.

would you post the backitup log for me to look at it?

hmmm, still struggling with this. The problem occurs even if I disable the verification. BTW, the network drive is running SAMBA.

I suppose that one of the Nero support guys with access to the source code could just look at what is causing the error...

This is an extract from the log file:

It's also complaining it can't find the trustedcerts.dat file. I don't know what that's all about since I don't have that file in the cache folder unless it's a temporary file. Perhaps it's there on a network. The only place I've ever encountered setting trustedcerts are in Microsoft office apps. I suppose you could also find it in the Windows Defender.

I still think it's got to do with some setting on your network such as the sync, even though you tried with verification off.

At this point, it's beyond me. We could mess with it for a long time but now I would be just grasping at very short straws and wasting your time. I recommend that you go to "support from a Nero expert" and either Online support or e-mail (may take up to a week to get a technical response). Online support will be available tomorrow.

If you get a resolution from Nero, please post it here for the benefit of others.
