Hi,
I was requested to start a new thread covering this topic. I built a W7 (64) PC after backing up over 500gb of data to 1tb USB drive using Backitup 4. Backitup4 came with the latest version of Nero 9 a couple of weeks ago. In the gui I can select the backup on the usb drive, but continually receive an error to make sure I select the correct drive when choosing a destination. I have tried to restore my files using Backitup & Burn using the cmd line process, that doesn't work. Any ideas or hints on what step to take next. I do have 4 other usb/firewire disk of backups using backitup. Ian M |

When you did the backup, was it just a named file backup or did you create a backup Job for files or was it a drive backup?
Do you have more than one partition on your hard drive? Is any partition large enough for the restore? This post has been edited by wither: Nov 5 2009, 05:43 PM |

I think it would be helpful if you could write the exact error message. Perhaps one of the backitup-fans here in the forum had already the same one - or it can help a Nero Employee to understand the problem.

I have built a new PC using W7 64 ultimate. The hardware was previously used on a Vista 64 Ultimate PC
The system is a quad core AMD 9550 running 8gb of ram. system disk is 238gb - C Scratch disk is 238gb - D data disk is 1tb - E Drives D & E were file backed up using Nero reload and Backitup v4 which came with it. I have over 500gb of files on a 1tb backup disk I have re-installed W7 a number of times in an attempt to discover if it is the hardware or the software that is causing some of the issues with Nero reload eg an error advising the software didn't install correctly but then runs. The error using "backitup & burn" is the same error I get using Backitup 4. "Backitup & burn" does allow access to the folders in the usb backup drive. The error message is shown in the attached file. Ian M |

I need to get some clarification so we're on the same page-
You said you did the backup with Reloaded and Backitup 4 which came with it. Reloaded came with Backitup and Burn and the version of Backitup in Backitup and Burn is 5.2.9. Backitup 4 is the previous standalone backup. program. If you did the backup in Reloaded, you would simply be copying files using Express. Would you provide a step by step list of what you did to create the backup, including the actual versions of the software? I asked what kind of backup you did because their are various ways of doing one. You can do a simple file backup which is given a name. You can create a backup "job" which has a name and different files types. You can do a drive backup which is entirely different. It's necessary to know exactly what you did. I'm sure you know that but spelled it out so that you know what I'm looking for. Thanks |

ok, you did a file backup with backitup 4 not the backitup and burn that came with Reloaded. Did you also include OS files?
Since you only did a file backup, you should click on the .nba file and select Explorer view instead of Standard view on the top tool bar. Select a non-system file and try to restore it to it's original location or to the D: partition. What happens? I'm also wondering what you saw when you ran the cmd line process that you said didn't work. |

Backitup and burn did not come with my reload.
I have also tried to upgrade to reload thinking i didn't have the latrest copy, but the Nerto web site advises I had the latest version and I could on;y download the trial version of "backitup and burn" to use for recovery. There no OS files on either D or E drive only data, except the swap file. The cmd line brings up the "backitup and burn" gui and nothing else. It looks like a normal double click on the icon start of "backitup and burn". I have tried all those tricks and still get the same error message. I have even created some of the folders and tried restoring individual files but get the same error message. Ian |

If Backitup and Burn did not come with what you're calling Reloaded, then all you did was download 9.4.26 to update your Version 9. Version 9.4.26 is the same as Reloaded but you have to pay for Reloaded to get Backitup and Burn free. You have Backitup 4 which is not Backitup and Burn.
I see that you tried to restore a file as I suggested and it didn't work. The CMD line is for Backitup. There should be no Backitup and Burn gui since you don't have it installed. Since Backitup 4 is not discussed as Win 7 compliant, I would run it in Virtual XP (which is part of Win 7) and try to restore a file. If that doesn't work, download the trial version of Backitup and Burn and try the restore a file. If you download the trial, you could also try the CMD line. Give it a whirl and see what happens. Thanks |

It sounds like you made some progress in that you were able to restore PDF's. Is that true? Which method worked to restore the files.

I kept opening folders until I found one that would allow me to open a file in it.
I don't plan on opening 70000 raw and jpeg files that way. Ian M |

You didn't say which method worked to restore the pdf files. What was it?
Were you able to restore a whole folder without having to select individual files? |

I will repeat my last statement, I kept opening folders until I found a file I could open by double clicking on it.
I have not been able to restore anything by using the backup restore process. I had to open it and then save as. I am currently trialing a method suggested by the Nero Technical Team. When the process has completed I will report the steps involved here. Ian M |

Method suggested by Nero support team.
all *.nba files should be the same length eg in my case I have 273 files so numbering should be 2xxxx001.nba, 2xxxx099.nba 2xxxx273.nba That worked once, well I only renumbered the first file to 2xxxx001.nba. I tried numbering 2-9 as was suggested, but that had no affect. Summary after a number of days of trying different approaches I have been able to restore just over 500gb of a 524gb backup. I have since found a way to get rid of that annoying error message I posted earlier. Now I put the cause of this to a bug in nero backitup and burn and also in backitup v4 where if you use the gui to start the restore process nero B&B fails to get access to the backup source as indicated by "Hard disk accessible: no". I found that if you open a folder with a *.nba file in it and double click on the file, the gui starts up in restore mode, the backup disk still shows not available, but if you click on the green arrow at the bottom right hand side and then click on the go back button when the next page has loaded you the backup disk is now accessible and you can proceed with your backup. I used both the naming convention above and the unmodified names and both work this way. I have done this a number of times while attempting to restore some missing photos The only problem I have is I can't restore about 1gb of photos from the early part of the backup. I can regenerate them from the raw files. I hope you find this helpful in your quest for restoration of your valuable data. Maybe if thought worthwhile part of this message could be cut and made into a sticky. Ian M Update. I was wrong about the missing photos, they were put in a place I wasn't expecting them to be. Next question is how to get B&B to register through a firewall with a proxy, nero 9 can. I have edited this to correct grammar and spelling errors.
