Downloading and installing Nero 11 still messes up the Backup Drivers, as of 7/13/12. I see the topic on this problem has been closed without any specific resolution, so I need to reipen it. I'm running XP SP3, fully updated.

I've uninstalled ALL Nero products and reinstalled V11 from scratch. It CLAIMED it was installing backup drivers, and yes, they do appear in the control panel's "Add or Remove Programs" app. But Backitup insists that they're not there, and if I ignore that and try to backup anyway, it fails, saying it's unable to initialize the backup driver.

I've use the update function in Nero Control Center, and it did do an update and reboot, but no change. I've even used "Add or Remove's" "repair" function to reinstall the backup drivers, with reboot, but no change.

As an excercise, I did try using Backitup's ImageTool to create a bootable DVD, and that DID work. Don't know it it's relevant. Haven't tried to boot it yet.

Any help out there? Please?

It may be an access problem. Which anti-virus program are you using? What happens if you disable it and all its security features?

Thanks, wither. I use the free version of AVAST. I had to disable it to install Nero, else it stopped the install. I will try rerunning the install in modify mode with AVAST turned off.

Rerunning the install with Avast turned off makes no difference. It essentially does nothing and says it's through.

So I uninstalled the bakup drivers (through control panel) with avast off and rebooted. Then I reran the installer with avast off, and it said it was going to install backup drivers. When it was through, I rebooted and ran backitup with avast still off, but it still can't find the drivers.

They are there. BackItUp just can't find them. How and where does it look for them? I've taken all defaults in installation, so I've not put them in any strange place, that I know of.

Now I don't install the ASK toolbar or participate in the "Product Improvement Program." Surely none of that matters!

Any more ideas? Surely I'm not the only one who's noticed this.

Did you ever have a different version of Nero installed?

If not, I recommend. that you send an e-mail to tech support. Go to nero.com, support, v11, tools and utilities. Download the "get support files" utility and run it. That will generate the nerosupport.cab file. Attach that to your e-mail.

If you would, please let us know the resolution

Thanks for the good advice! I'm running "get support files" now. It's "infotool" crashed, which may in itself be evidence. I'll nag tech support.

Yes, I had Nero 8 installed. I didnt' uninstall it before installing 11, but later, I uninstalled it, 11, AND the backup drivers, and started from scratch installing 11. It's entirely possible that some residual Nero 8 setting is interfering with 11.

Hello DesertTortoise,

Nero 11 can run concurrently on a single system along with Nero Multimedia Suite 10 Platinum HD, Nero Multimedia Suite 10, Nero 9 and Nero 8, without needing to uninstall these previous versions of Nero. However, earlier versions of Nero may not run concurrently with Nero 11. If you experience problems installing Nero 11 on your system, however, we recommend that you make use of the Nero General Cleantool for Nero 9 and Nero 8.

Download the CleanTool to uninstall Nero 8 version from your computer.

I asked about previous versions of Backitup because I found that the Backitup package you could install separately with V9 interfered with Backitup in V10. If you run the general clean tool, as identified by PoetSmurfTY, that should get rid of the V8 Backitup.

Thanks again, guys. I did download the cleanup program and I used it to purge everything. Then, with AVAST turned off, I uninstalled Nero 11 and the Backup Drivers, rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted, installed updates, and rebooted. All with AVAST off.

No change. Still can't load drivers. But it's in the hands of tech support now, so I'll wait to see what they can come up with.

I suspect that in all this, KwikMedia may NOT have been uninstalled. It's in a separate folder, and I see that I've wound up with duplicate shortcuts on my desktop. So there's still one loose end untied up. But I'll wait for Tech Support before I do any more damage.

Thanks again!

KM is installed in it's own folder. Except for a few things, it's generally independent of the other Nero apps. If you have v10 and v11 installed, you can update KM from either version and the update will be take effect for both versions.

I think the problem can be fixed by installing some things from the Temp folder created during the installation but I can't remember exactly what they are.

Just to keep this thread current: Nero referred me to a new version of the install package and said that that would fix the problem. It didn't. So I've rerun their info collector and sent them that new info. We'll see...

Nero support is unable to reproduce this problem on their virgin XP system. They continue to suggest that I reinstall, no matter how many times I've already done that. So I'm giving up on them, and probably on BackItUp in general.

BackItUp must depend on settings that can have been previously altered by other software installed on the system, and Nero will never find those.

I know my buddy has the same problem on his own XP SP3 system. DOES ANYBODY ELSE OUT THERE SEE IT? Otherwise I'll just give up on this. There must be other backup solutions out there.

Run msconfig.exe.

In the Services tab, checkmark the box "hide all Microsoft...". Then checkmark the box to disable all other services. In the Startup tab, checkmark the box to disable all startup items. Reboot. Does that help?

Whether or not it does, run msconfig.exe again and reset everything back to normal as soon as possible.
