I'm a Nero user for many years and just created my first coasters using Nero. I had about 5 failures in a row using two different DVD-RW drives. Thing is, even though Nero signaled a failed burn, I am able to see and copy the files from the last DVD I created. Neither do I spot the problem in the log file. So, I'm totally puzzled. I'm using Verbatim media, which has always worked well for me, at half rated speed. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks,

Try burning at 4x. There's no errors that normally come with burning at too high write speed and there's no errors that suggest problems with the discs. Most DVD's are rated for 1-4x although some burners seem to be able to get around that.
Does that work? |

Thanks, Wither, but nope. tried that already. In fact, I eventually tried whatever speed was the lowest possible. :(
Thanks for confirming that I'm not missing the obvious on the log file, too. But, again, I CAN read the files, at least on the latest media. SOMETHING is happening after the disc is finalized, it seems to me. That I would have the same problem on two drives, one internal and one USB external, makes me even crazier! |

I ran a DiscSpeed Disc Quality test and obtained the following results, which I don't really know how to interpret with confidence. The overall quality score was 98, which sounds good, presuming 100 is the maximum good value.

I was going to ask you to run discspeed if the 4x didn't work. The tests I usually ask people to run are the Benchmark (to find the optimal burn speed) and the Create Disc (to see if you get any errors). Could you try that?
Do you have disc verification turned on? The thing that bothers me is that it quit writing at 398... when it was supposed to quit writing at 167... |

Every now and then one can get a bad batch. I bought a pack of 20 blu ray disks and every single one I tried failed to work. I returned them to Fry's and got full refund. Another box from the same manufacturer worked fine. I recall trying 3 different burners and every one rejected the disk. ie: there were no coaster as I never even got far enough to write on them. Another time I bought some LTH blu rays because there were cheap and seemed to work. Later, I updated an LG BD590 player to new firmware and none of those LTH type blu-rays I had burned worked any more.
Is is possible the disk is overheating. Is it hot to the touch when you eject the coaster? |

Generally, when a LTH or HTL disc doesn't work, you have to get a newer driver or firmware from the manufacturer. There are a number of threads on this.

I even complained to LG about not being able to play LTH anymore and they wrote the following back (note their misspelling of Low To High = LTH) Joseph, Thank you for emailing LG Electronics. I will be happy to assist you today. You are correct you will not be able to play the LHT BD-R on this player. We do not have an upgrade to allow the playback to the LHT. Have a great day! Should you have any other questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us again either via email, or by calling our customer service division at 800-243-0000 at your convenience. Thing is, you said LTH seemed to work. They're telling you to use the HTLs (if you can find them) or get a different drive. I guess LG/Hitachi don't want to accomodate anybody or maybe it's not possible to make the drive conform to LTH.

I guess LG/Hitachi don't want to accomodate anybody or maybe it's not possible to make the drive conform to LTH. Yea - I had played some LTH blu ray on my LG set top box but after a firmware upgrade they would not play anymore. AFAIK, the default method to create BD-R is the High To Low method. The Low To High using dye is cheaper. I had not heard of HTL before you mentioned it. Movies are not distributed on LTH BluRay disks and never will be. People like me backup movies onto cheap disks for playing. RIAA does not like that and probably leaned on LG to prevent their set top players from playing movies written on LTH disks but that is just a guess. I am more careful now on upgrading firmware on set top players. I let someone else find out if the new firmware release has Cinavia and their backup movies no longer play. That way I know not to upgrade the firmware on my settop player. Firmware release version info will NOT tell you if new copyprotection is included. That is a requirement from RIAA to license their movies. OEM had to sign off on the license that they would not inform buyers as to whether they had protection enabled or disabled or whether or not it is even in the player or not. Clearly any vendor advertising that their player had a better protection mechanism would go to the bottom of any review recommendation. "Caution: This player contains Cinavia and is also incapable of playing any LTH disks" is not something to advertize on a new BluRay player. Likewise I don't expect to see "Caution: This recorder cannot burn at 1x speed because the laser intensity may cause the disk to catch on fire". So I had asked in another thread about whether Nero could burn at slow speeds or not. |
