I found a problem with Nero 11 which is not in Nero 10.
I am converting VHS tapes to DVDs by transferring them to DVD with a “DVD Video Recorder” then using Nero Vision to edit and create menus. If I record at “High Quality” play (1 hour per disk) the final Nero transcoding takes about 20 minutes for a 2 Hour disk. If I initially record at “Standard Quality” (2 hours per disk) the final Nero transcoding takes about 6 hours for a 2 hour disk. Nero 10 did not have this problem and I explain why below. The difference boils down to the .mpg files that Nero 11 creates when importing. Files from a “High Quality” recording end up with a .mpg file with a bit rate of 9750 bps and it takes 20 minutes to transcode a 2 hour disk. Files from a “Standard Quality” recording end up with a .mpg file with a bit rate of 6380 bps and it takes 6 Hours to transcode. Nero 10 created imports from a “Standard Quality” recording with a bit rate of around 9700bps ( looking at my old imports) so transcoding time was not a problem. Can anyone explain this anomaly? Is there any way to force the Nero 11 Import function to create .mpg files with a 9750 bps rate so transcoding is faster like it was in Nero 10? I would know something more about the steps you are doing in both situation.
Anyway, have you tried changing the setup before start the importing: Click on "more" button in main window, and modify the relevant "recording format options" Let me know if this can help. Found the problem with Nero 11
If you use the “Import Disk” function on a disk that was recorded at ‘Normal” speed (2 Hours) AND edit the result the “Smart Transcoding” goes to zero and it takes 6 hours to transcode the disk. If you use the “Import Files” (VOB files) function on the disk AND edit the video the Smart transcoding stays near 100% and transcoding takes minutes to perform. The problem does not appear to be when the original is in ‘High Quality“ mode (1 hour) or if it was imported using Nero 10. Could be specific to my set-up or a problem with the Nero 11 Import routine, but I never had this problem with previous versions of Nero. If you have very slow transcoding try the following work around. Remember do not use the “Import Disk” function only use the “Import Files” function on the VOB files. I'm not absolutely positive but, when you import the VTS...VOB, you lose edits and menus which require time to encode. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Victorvdc
I have modified my previous post: I used a wrong word. Hope now is clear, anyway I'll test the two solution you've proposed, using different settings of "recording format options". The goal is to find the output format suitable for your Input format to enable "smart encoding" (assuming you don't change the format from input to output). So I'll check the defaults during "IMPORT". Note that the smart encoding was changed from V10 to V11, and you have one more setting choice: "Flexible". Did you try using that instead of "Automatic"? wither: Both methods give the "same" mpg file. Well they look the same when you get info but something is obviously different.
adriannb2:I tested all possible 'Smart Encoding " settings and still Disk imports from Standard Speed (2Hours) is a problem) Remember if you do not edit the import the Smart encoding stays at 100% but as soon as you make a minor edit Smart encoding drops to 0%. If the source was Hi qual (1Hr) or a Nero 10 Import or a direct VOB file import the Smart encoding drops to around 99% after an edit which still is a fast transcode. Nero 11 Smart Encoder works fine with the 2 hour Imports from Nero 10. I dont have the time to reinstall Nero 10 to see what its transcoder does. |

Hi Victoryvdc,
I don't fully understand what you mean, I need to experiment myself to understand. I have V10 installed on Vista 32 bits and V11 on Win7 64 bits on same PC (dual boot), so if you are so kind to give me a step by step giude, I can test both without to much work... When you say "Hi qual" do you mean .MTS files/HD video ? Regards Adriano P.s. QUOTE Remember if you do not edit the import the Smart encoding stays at 100% but as soon as you make a minor edit Smart encoding drops to 0%. If the source was Hi qual (1Hr) or a Nero 10 Import or a direct VOB file import the Smart encoding drops to around 99% after an edit which still is a fast transcode Yes. I'm not sure that always true 0<-->100, but it's true that after editing the encoding time growth and SmartEncoding drops down dramatically.
