I've got some rare 80s movies on VHS that are not available on DVD. I want to transfer these movies to DVD, but my VCR/DVD combo unit will not allow me to burn a copy-protected VHS movie. Is there any way around this? Not looking to make a profit and sell these; I just don't want to risk ruining the tape or getting it stuck in the VCR so I prefer the movies on DVD. These are for my own personal viewing pleasure.

Not that I'm aware of. I thought copyright protection only lasted 20 years but, then I'm not a lawyer. Even if that was the case, the software in the recorder would have to know how to detect and bypass it.

Just as you can't copy commercially made video tapes to another VCR due to Macrovision anti-copy encoding, the same applies to making copies to DVD. DVD recorders cannot bypass the anti-copy signal on commercial VHS tapes or DVDs. If a DVD recorder detects the anti-copy encoding on a commercial DVD it will not start the recording and display some sort of message either on screen or on its LED front panel display that it detects the anti-copy code or that it is detecting an unusable signal.
However. I can recommend one firm which can solve it. I have found here such site http://xdimax.com/grex/grex.html.
They have a device - GREX, I heard that with its help it is possible to block protection DVD and satellite tv-channels and to write down transfers on the dvd. It removes Macrovision.

$89 for the unit suggested by bt06437, I find a bit expensive for some rare 80s movies.

Also they do not have any contact address !!!!!!.

So who will be libel for any infringements. If video are rare, and so desirable, why not try and contact the copyright owners and see if there is any way of obtaining DVD for them.

I use a product from ROXIO called Easy VHS to DVD. It is a USB device that plugs into your VCR and will capture the playback and save it to HD (can also copy direct to DVD, but I prefer to review and trim if needed before burning). It does only work with the software that comes with it, but the output is easily edited with Nero. As far as the copyright is concerned, fair use allows you to make a backup for your personal use. I just make sure I keep the original Cassette incase the copyright police should come knocking.

Hi I use a Pinnacle DVC100 device to copy all my old copy protected (Disney) VHS tapes to DVD, it copies the tape to your HDD usind pinnacle software, you can then edit it with Nero Video 11.I have done about 30 tapes without any trouble

I used Pinnacle DVC150, I guess it is just an older version of the same tool. I haven't had any problems either.
