I want to create an image of the primary drive (500gig) onto a new drive (2TB) and make it active. Then replace the primary (500gig) with the new drive (2TB) and make it the primary. Can this be done with BackItUp? OS is Win 7 Premium. Yes it is already formated NTFS and shows as 1.8TB.

I would create two partitions on the new drive, say C and D, and then use Backitup to do a drive backup to the D: drive on the new hdd. You would have to select the "master boot record" option when you make the backup. Obviously both partitions would have to be large enough for the backup and then the restore. Then, you would create a bootable disc (CD or DVD) that contains the Backitup Image Tool. After shutting down, you would boot from the bootable disc and do a restore from the D: partition to the C: partition on the new hdd. I've never tried it. Technically, I'm not sure what happens when the master boot record from the old hdd is restored to a new hdd with a different size.
You could also ask tech support if this would work or perhaps there's another way.

Hi all

This post is a WARNING

in my opinion you must make this process with care, and don't destroy the original System until you check the Windows Update functions.

I had some problem doing a similar process:
Last year I saved my C: drive (controller 0, port 0 - 32 bits Vista O.S.) by selecting only the system partition (Not the full drive, to exclude the recovery partition).
Then I install Win 7 on a new hard disc. In some step of this process, I swap the port connection of the drives.
When I try to restore the Vista partition I need to swap them again. At the end of the restore operation, that I did booting BackItUp Image Tool, I swaped again the drives, but at this point Microsoft said to me that I used an illegal copy: it is not true but I must to swap again my drives!

Now: I'm not sure of the exact sequence of operation I describe here, but anyway take care of this description and check carefully the final situation, before of destroying the original system disc!

Adriano
